Some games need a full payment per month to be able to play at all (WoW)

some have a free to play and a premium play

and some have a full free to play



how exactly do they make money? off of advertisements?

How do game companies make money off of free to play games?
I would think mostly advertisements, a store with gear might also be a possibility though too. If the game gets big enough, the owner/founder might sell it to a different company for lots of money depending on the popularity of the game. Then the other company might earn money by doing the same thing or make their users pay for premium or pay all the time.

Yea they get money from advertising, but they also make a profit when you purchase the actual game.
